About the Cell
The Institution has established a Women Empowerment Cell (WEC) in the college campus to empower and safeguard the rights of female members; faculty, staff and students. The WEC works to promote gender equality in the campus and conduct diverse programmes to educate, sensitize both male and female members and produce harmonious atmosphere on the campus.
"Empowering women to lead with confidence and dignity"
Aiming at intellectual and social upliftment of the female students and staffs, the cell stands for facilitating women's empowerment through guest lectures, seminars, awareness programmes and other welfare activities.
Objectives of the Cell
- Identification and building of strong leadership among women faculty and students.
- To create a secure physical and social environment to deter any act of sexual harassment.
- To promote a culture of respect and equality for female gender.
- To make them aware about the guidelines of Supreme Court and to ensure that sexual harassment is treated as an unacceptable social behaviour within the institution and the society.
- To organise skill development programs for the rural women to enhance their livelihood, also to help them to identify the sources of financial support.
- To conduct seminar, workshop to impart knowledge of opportunities and tools available and train the women.
- To inculcate entrepreneurial attitude among young girls, so that they can be "job providers" rather than "job seekers".
Inauguration & Guest Lecture
Dr. V. Jayanthini, MBBS, MD, DPM, HOD - Pediatrics & Psychiatry, Institute of Child Health & Hospital, inaugurated the cell and gave a guest lecture on "Women and child care".
Artificial Jewellery Making Workshop
WEC arranged a one-day workshop on Artificial Jewellery making for rural women with Mrs. Poornima Satheesh (Juz thread creations) training around 50 rural women. Madam Chancellor Dr. Anuradha Ganesan presided over the Inauguration.
Women Entrepreneurs Workshop
Workshop on "Opportunities and challenges for women entrepreneurs in India" by Mrs. Jaishree Krishnan, Proprietor, D'Organica Farming, Chennai.
Organic Farming Initiative
Dr. S.P. Sangeetha and Dr. Jennifer G Joseph started organic farming in AVIT campus with medicinal plants, fruits, flowering plants and vegetables to create awareness about Organic farming and its health benefits.
Women's Day Celebration
Mrs. Vanitha, DIG, Coastal Security force and Mrs. Sona Prakash, MD, Drizzles were Chief Guests. Various competitions for faculty and students were conducted with prizes awarded to winners.
Honoring Thai Delegates
WEC honored Dr. Sukruedee Sukchai and Ms. Pornpimol Sugandhavanija with special women achiever's award. Cultural events included college band performance, Nepali dance, Bharatanatyam, and an awareness skit.
Rexona Confidence Training
Program on grooming and confidence for girl students and faculty in association with Hindustan Unilever Limited, with gift hampers distributed.
Self Employment Workshop
Training on Jute bag embroidery and shilpkar jewellery in association with Kumudam Snehidihi and Pidilite, with trainers Mrs. Jayshree Narayanan & Mrs. Umakrishnan.
Baking & Confectionery Workshop
Ms. S. Meenashi Kannan and Ms. Priscilla Kalaimugil trained participants in baking. Handouts and certificates were issued to all participants.
Women's Day Celebration
Grand event with Dr. A. S. Ganesan and Dr. Anuradha Ganesan. Padmashree Dr. Vijayalakshmi Navaneethakrishnan received Woman Excellence award. AVIT Exceptional Mother award presented to five single mothers.
International Women's Day
Honored Dr. Kamala Selvaraj, Ms. Anu Khosla, and Mrs. Vanitha. Released WEC Newsletter and presented various awards including VMRF Women's Leadership Award and Exceptional Girl Student awards.
